Why a top manager is not always a good owner, and vice versa

Almost every employee thought about starting a business. Of course, not many dare to take risks and assume obligations for hiring employees, finances, promotion of the business, etc.

To the owner of the company abandoned the business and hired to work, he must first be defeated. Why it happens? The reason is very simple - the role of the owner of the company gives more freedom, more room for creativity. Of course, it is fraught with more dangers, but freedom intoxicates the imagination.

By the way, this has nothing to do with money. Often the owner of the company earns less than he could earn as a top manager. This has nothing to do with abilities - while conducting training under the projects of the School of Business Owners and the School of Managers, I saw a lot of talented top managers and many owners with average abilities. This is not related to hard work: owners usually work no less and no more than top managers. What is the difference? Why do some not think of themselves as an employee, while others look with sympathy at the owners of small companies, not understanding why they are “playing in the sandbox”?

In order to understand this, you first need to understand how the main function of the owner differs from the main function of the top manager of the company. The owner first of all creates the "religion" of his company, he forms the ideology, he is to some extent the creator of a special universe in which there are certain laws. He is the creator, albeit small, but of the universe. Let it be just a universe of several dozen people, deep down he dreams of more, the expansion of this universe.

The main function of a top manager is to ensure that goals are realized, his goal is to lead people, to achieve results in activities. The owner is the one who sets the purpose of the trip and the rules of the game, the top manager chooses the route and leads people along this path. These are two components of a single whole. Sometimes they try to combine this in one person, for 10 years of work Vysotsky Consulting with entrepreneurs - it is proved, usually it is not successful. It is difficult to set high goals, knowing that it will be necessary to overcome all the obstacles on the way to them. On the other hand, it is difficult to overcome obstacles when the opportunity to correct goals is in your hands. The ideal state of affairs is two strong people, one of whom has the gift of predicting the future, forms wonderful goals and creates a brilliant strategy. The second is a commander devoted to these goals, able to lead people, achieve performance no matter what.

In more detail, I described the separation of the work of the owner and director in my book Responsibilities of the owner of the company”..

Which role to choose, which of these two games to play? The answers to these questions do not depend on external circumstances, nor on the opportunities that "go into the hands." Each person is individual, each has his own motives and character. I believe that you need to choose the activity that is closer to the person himself, more consistent with his character.

The attempt to "think sensibly" - mathematically accurately calculate what will give greater returns, will only lead to disappointment. Because no one can say that being an owner is much better than a hired top manager. Each of these roles has its pros and cons; it has its own opportunities and risks. Twenty years ago, talented leaders had no choice - in order to realize themselves, it was necessary to create a company simply for the reason that there was nowhere to work. Today the situation is different: skilled managers are valued, there are many companies, many owners who are waiting for such leaders. Especially going through a workshop on the organizational structure or school owners - entrepreneurs need cool TOPs. It is impossible to build a system business, and therefore grow, without a team!

How to choose? Just look at what you enjoy at work. Becoming the owner of the company, you actually determine your future for many years, possibly for life. Of course, if you want to create an outstanding company. Almost all the outstanding companies are created by people who have dedicated their whole life to this. Creating your own company, you are likely to be limited for some time in resources. As a top manager, you get at your disposal all the energy of the company, your freedom in daily actions is practically no different from the freedom of the owner, but you are not so attached to this company. Of course, you have to follow the established goals and ideology, but if the owner of the company is wise and professional, this can not be considered a disadvantage. On the other hand, the role of the owner gives maximum creative freedom for the development of the company. But the freedom of creativity is valuable only if you have the competence that you can get by studying at Visotsky Consulting.

You choose! Choose the game that you like. If I want to play the role you want to play in the future, I advise you to read in detail my book “Obligations of the owner of the company. There I wrote in detail exactly what the role of the founder is, why he needs a strong team and how to transfer operational management into the hands of intelligent managers. A read book will help TOP managers to better understand the owner, and founders are not afraid to transfer some functions to the best TOPs. Remember, you can achieve a lot in either of these two games.
